I wonder if anyone of you has checked the BIOS to see if it allows booting off a USB drive (other than a floppy).
I came across some news about a 1.5GB hard drive from Mobilemag:
http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/102/C1561/
As I write, www.cornice.com's site is down, but I saw a USB drive that incorporates this drive yesterday and it's sweet.
Since this drive is not a flash drive, it has faster read/write rates, and can withstand a lot of writing operations.
So, I'm beginning to think about booting off this drive. At 1.5GB, that should be pretty darn good space for loading an OS and more.
So, can the proud owners of the P5000 please check to see if there's USB boot capability on your BIOS? Thanks. |

I would be surprised if the 5 series didn't have a USB boot option as my P1120 has a USB boot option. Unfortunately I couldn't get my P to boot from a USB CF flash card. If anyone manages to get this drive to boot I'd love to hear about it because I need an external boot option to do stuff, e.g., reinstall XP or maybe do a linux distro without starting with floppies. |

Booting from a flash card isn't a good idea because it's slow, and flash memory can't handle continual read/write operations as it will soon get exhausted. So it'll be nice to have a real hard drive off USB do the job.
My P2040 doesn't support USB boot, unfortunately. Wonder why your P1120 has it and the P2040 doesn't.
And I have the same thoughts about using this feature for booting OSes I'd like to try out. Imagine mini-1.5GB hdrives pre-loaded with linux distros, with drivers specific to your notebook. |

Maybe because the 1120 has an external USB floppy and needs to be able to boot from it? |

The P2x series can't boot from USB, but the P1x and P5x can.
On the P2x, Fujitsu added USB2 support by adding a third-party controller chip. The Crusoe chipset's BIOS doesn't directly support it though, so the USB ports only become active after Windows loads drivers for the chip, and thus you can't boot from it. The chipset does have a USB1 controller which it can boot from (in theory), but the USB ports on the machine aren't connected to it.
The P1x uses the Crusoe chipset's internal USB1 controller, and the P5x uses the USB2 controller built-in to the Centrino chipset. So, both of these machines can boot from USB devices.

Actually only the P2120 can't boot from USB, all the rest of the P2k series will... |

Has anyone booted a P5010 using the floppy drive option listed in the BIOS? Does it have to be the Fujitsu floppy drive, or will any USB floppy drive work?
Thanks, EB |

I booted it off a USB flash drive with the drive's switch set to FDD mode without fail. |

I have about 10 of them... this particular one was some Taiwanese knock-off $10 device based on the standard 8051 controller.
For the best ones out there - go to http://www.diskonkey.com - M-Systems owns the IP for this category and they make most of the devices sold worldwide.

Well, I got the 32MB Disk on Key Pro, but it won't boot DOS (Win '98). The device works fine in Windows of course. What do I need to do?
Thanks, EB |

As far as i know, only a few flash drive are bootable. Check yours. But I managed to boot Windows 2000 from my USB HDD (ZIV2, the great thing). Just need to have proper BIOS......
Look forward to getting my P in summer. |

Well, the Disk on Key pro should be bootable. It does have an ARM processor and I did find a reference on another forum to USB flash booting. http://www.computing.net/dos/wwwboard/forum/13324.html I also purchased another brand and that does not work either. The problem is that I am not a computer person and am therefore most likely overlooking something obvious.
I have already wasted $90 and will stop at that point until I get an answer whether it is possible with the DOK pro. If not I will need to offer some money for a known bootable USB flash device in a for sale section somewhere. The main thing is that I need the 2nd battery and do not have the space to travel with the optical drive just for booting Ghost, Drive Image, other utilities, etc.
